The historical character by the name Litovoi (a word that is a polytonym not an anthroponym), who lived in the current province of Oltenia in the second half of the thirteenth century, had several predecessors who were very active in the northern regions of the Empires of Constantinople and Tarnovo. Their existence suggests that Terra Lytua had had an institutional history of several centuries before the foundation of the medieval State of Țara Românească/Wallachia.
