Despite the general opinion that the society in the Carpathian-Danubian space had, in the last century of the first millennium, only primary organizational structures, the historical documents testify the existence in this region of some strong pre-state political formations. Some of these are temporarily under the control of foreign political and military elites, but all of them belong to the indigenous population and have a history in the legal and territorial structures of classical and late Antiquity.
